There aren’t many places in the world where you can spot whales on land, sea and in the air, getting fresh perspectives and enjoying new experiences every time. Sip on sundowners as you watch the horizon glow with orange light, see sharks, penguins and dolphins in their natural habitat and go on a historical cave tour that will open your eyes. You’ll also explore the unique fynbos kingdom at Grootbos with knowledgeable guides who’re passionate about this area they call home.
Arrive at Grootbos Nature Reserve and enjoy a delicious lunch using seasonal ingredients we’ve sourced from our own organic farm. Check-in to your suite and then head off on a land-based whale watching excursion as you spot Southern Right Whales not more than 30 metres from the coast. Sip on a sundowner from the balcony of our Whale House and then later, sample a delectable 5-course dinner back at the lodge.
Mystery and wonderAfter a cup of coffee and a pastry, you’ll leave for Kleinbaai Harbour where you’ll board our luxury boat and experience the Marine Big 5 in all their glory: whales, sharks, penguins, dolphins and seals. Return to the lodge mid-morning for a delicious brunch before you enjoy some relaxation time in your suite or at the beauty salon. In the afternoon, we’ll head to the pristine beaches of Walker Bay where you’ll learn all about ancient caves and the intriguing history of the area.
Mystery and wonderAfter breakfast get ready for an invigorating 4x4 flower safari where you’ll spot vividly coloured wildflowers, the birds who pollinate them, as well as forests, valleys and wide vistas. After a sumptuous lunch, board a Cessna and view the whales from a completely different perspective during an unforgettable 30-minute flight over Walker Bay. End your day with a delicious 5-course dinner in our restaurant.

Head out into the fynbos on foot with your expert nature guide. Discover the deep ancient Afro-Montane or nearby ancient Milkwood forests and marvel at this natural wonderland and all it has to offer.
Mount up and explore the 3500 hectare reserve on horseback with our experienced equestrian guides on hand. Every competency level can be catered for and pony rides for the kids are always a hit.
Explore the nearby coastal limestone caves with your guide on hand to explain the remarkable stories behind the early dwellers of these caves. The Klipgat cave is an example of early human dwellings dating back to the Middle and late Stone Age.
Mark the end of another day in paradise from one of our sundowner spots high up on the reserve with endless vistas in every direction or on ‘Piano’ Rock as you sip your favourite drink to crashing of the waves and the breaching of the Southern Right Whales.

The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
