As we enter a brand new year, we can't help but reflect on our unwavering commitment to fostering growth, community impact and positive change.
From conservation efforts that safeguard the unique flora and fauna of the region to educational programs that ignite the spark of knowledge in young minds, our Grootbos Foundation serves as a testament to the transformative power of collective action.
December marked a significant achievement for our Horticulture and Hospitality students as they proudly graduated from Green Futures College.
Nineteen graduates completed a transformative year of rigorous study, invaluable mentorship, and the learning of essential life skills. These dedicated individuals are now poised for succes. We eagerly anticipate watching them as they apply their acquired skills to positively impact not only their own lives but also the lives of their families.
The entomology team successfully concluded the final phase of 108 spring insect surveys across 12 distinct sites. The upcoming tasks involve meticulous pinning, microscope photography, identification, and databasing.
These efforts aim to establish a comprehensive baseline, facilitating the measurement of changes in insect populations. The resulting survey data will be shared with external researchers and be used to inform adaptive management plans geared towards safeguarding biodiversity.
The Biodiversity Steward Dune Clearing Project is actively underway within the picturesque Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Within this scenic landscape, our dedicated team is diligently working to remove the invasive rooikrans, a species that has been overpowering the indigenous flora and hindering the growth of diverse endemic plants native to the region.
This initiative aims to restore and promote the natural balance of the ecosystem, fostering the resilience of the unique biodiversity found within the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
Coach Corrie from our Grootbos Football Foundation team participated in a Climate Change Training Workshop alongside UNICEF and Coaches Across Continents.
The primary goal was to collaboratively explore innovative ways of leveraging sports to foster a profound respect for our planet. The aim is to integrate conservation-focused curriculums, such as Earth Rangers, into development sports programs.
Witness the bold and determined stance of a spotted thick-knee as it courageously defends its precious eggs. A tenacious encounter unfolds as one of the conservation team members unwittingly approaches a tad too close for comfort.
Follow along with us as we head into a new year filled with opportunities to make a difference in our communities and the nature surrounding us. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the environment, education, and community development, fostering a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow.
Thank you for being part of the Grootbos Foundation's journey.
Grootbos is a world leader in sustainable tourism and has been awarded some of the highest international accolades possible, making us one of only a handful of lodges to achieve this.
The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
